Permis de conduire

Voici les démarches que vous devrez entreprendre en tant que citoyen australien si vous séjournez plus d’un an en Nouvelle-Calédonie et que vous désirez y conduire (en langue anglaise uniquement).

The Australian Consulate-General provides the following information to Australians concerning French and New Caledonian regulations applicable to foreign residents for drivers’ licences.

One year from receipt of a "carte de séjour" (residency card), it is possible to exchange an Australian driver’s licence for a French licence at the Transport Department of New Caledonia (DITTT – Direction des Infrastructures, de la Topographie et des Transports Terrestres).

The principle of exchange of drivers’ licences rests on the notion that surrendering an Australian licence for a French one ensures that someone who has lost their licence in one country cannot simply revert to the licence of another. This principle is upheld by all nations that permit foreign residents to hold local licences.

Should you wish to return to Australia for a short visit, it is possible to ask DITTT to issue an international driver’s licence for use in Australia, in conjunction with a French licence.

An Australian citizen can legally drive in Australia for up to 12 months on a French licence and a French-issued international licence. Please note that an international driver’s licence issued in Australia is only valid for driving overseas, not in the country of issue (i.e. Australia).

On permanent departure from New Caledonia, you should reclaim your Australian driver’s licence and exchange your French licence.
